Denver now requiring recycling and reuse plans for demolition jobs

The City and County’s new “Waste No More” policy has new requirements for construction and demolition jobs as of June 1, 2023. Here’s a breakdown of what it means and how we can help.

Blog updated: 2/26/2024

In 2023, Denver joined a handful of cities in the U.S. in creating rules to divert construction and demolition (C&D) waste from the landfill by requiring reuse and recycling plans, as well as recycling and reuse compliance forms, for all demolition projects.

Ballot initiative 306, known as the “Waste No More” ordinance, was approved by voters in November 2022 and also requires commercial entities such as apartment complexes, office buildings, restaurants, and other businesses to offer recycling and composting services.

We can assist you in meeting the new requirements by creating the reuse and recycling plans for your construction or demolition project, providing the demolition and deconstruction service, and by sorting and hauling the materials from your site. Call or email us today.

What does the new “Waste No More” initiative require of construction and demolition sites?

As of June 1, 2023, those applying for construction and demolition permits must submit:

Why Choose Perks Deconstruction for Your Demolition Project in Denver

Our goal is and always has been to salvage, reuse, and recycle as many materials as possible with every demolition job we take on. Our process of surgically dismantling structures in the reverse order they are built preserves the value of every material, and we work with ethical local and national reuse and recycling partners to find the highest and best use for all materials. This Zero Waste approach allows us to salvage up to 85% of all the materials we deconstruct, making every job a project clients can feel good about. Read more in our 2022 Company Highlights Annual Report.

In addition, deconstructing and salvaging structures instead of demolishing them has added bonuses:

We are excited about the new requirements, which will help keep valuable materials out of the landfill and keep them in the production loop. In Colorado, up to 40% of all landfill waste is C&D waste. With the new ordinance in place, Denver will reduce the city’s C&D waste while turning these materials into local recycled stock or highly sought after reclaimed lumber, appliances, and more.
